General surgery focuses on the abdomen and contained tissue and organs (oesophagus, stomach, large and small intestine).

The general surgery team at Tyneside Surgical Services have subspecialties in upper and lower GI, colorectal surgery and vascular surgery. Examples of some of the procedures performed are:

• Hernia repair – repairing a hernia through laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery
• Laparoscopic cholecystectomy – removal of the gall bladder through several small incisions
• Breast Reduction – A prodecure carried out to decrease breast size and relieve physical symptoms such as discomfort, neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain and skin irritation
