Providing NHS services

Colorectal

Colorectal surgery is the branch of medicine and surgery that deals with the colon, anus and rectum.

This area of medicine is less commonly referred to as proctology, which specifically focuses on the anus and rectum. The colon is also known as the large intestine.

Conditions that may be treated by colorectal surgery are diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, haemorrhoids, and removal of polyps.

The colorectal surgery team at Tyneside Surgical Services performs:

  • Endoscopic procedures – Procedures such as colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy to examine the colon, anus or rectum to aid in the diagnosis of a condition
  • EUA – Examination under anaesthetic (if a condition cannot be examined properly due to location or pain)
  • Haemorrhoidectomy – The removal of haemorrhoids (when non-surgical methods are not suitable)
